TLVFD

Our primary source of training is internal within the department. Our most structured training occurs at our monthly  meetings and subsequent Saturday exercises.

Possibly more important are intermittent exercises where small groups participate in truck driving, pump operation, etc. exercises. These sessions may be conducted at any time when 2 or more members (at least one qualified operator) can schedule them. These offer a high level of learning opportunity, as the group is usually small, and the atmosphere is relaxed. All members are encouraged to initiate and participate in these exercises as often as possible. Any member can initiate this training at any time by requesting a session with any truck captain or qualified operator. However, driving of the tankers by members who are not designated operators requires special arrangements with Charlie Orr or Ken McConnell.

Possibly the most overlooked training opportunity is to participate in weekly truck inspections. All members are encouraged to register to assist with these inspections. The job has to be accomplished and participation offers quality training. If you can run the tests, you are capable of helping with field pump operation prior to being qualified as an operator.

EXTERNAL

Neighboring fire departments, EMS groups, pipeline companies, helicopter rescue companies, counties and Texas Forest Service occasionally extend invitations to attend their training sessions. These sessions may cover a wide variety of topics.

Invitations are often informal and sometimes late in coming, but appropriate invitations will be passed along to all members as soon as possible. Members are encouraged to attend these sessions if possible.

TEXAS FOREST SERVICE

The Texas Forest Service operates two residential training centers in the state where a wide variety of topics are offered.

The timing, subject matter and location of this training will be announced to department personnel as they become available. Most of this training requires at least one overnight stay. The department will pay for tuition, reasonable motel fees and some gasoline costs to attendees.
